Gewurztraminer WINE
Gewürztraminer is a pink grape famous for producing some of the most distinctive aromatic wines in the world. The name means spiced traminer. The grape is found in the fertile clay soils of Alsace. The grape originally comes from Germany but has travelled to different regions in the Alps. The grape does well in a climate of warm days and cool nights. The synonyms are Traminer Aromatico, Traminer Musque, Traminer, Gentil Aromatique and Savagnin Rose Aromatique.Vines and wine making
The grapes are picked and separated from the stems. The grapes should be picked when they are cool and cool temperatures maintained during the entire process to prevent them from turning bitter.Next, the grapes are crushed, and cool temperatures are maintained during the entire process. The temperatures should be 40oF. The wine should be filtered to remove any residue. Yeast is then added to ferment the wine. The temperatures during the fermentation process should be maintained between 50-55oF and should not be allowed to go below 50 degrees. The fermentation takes ten days. Ensure that the yeast is killed at some point to manage the residual sugars. The wine is then coldstabilized by chilling it to 32 degrees until no crystals form.
Organoleptic properties
The Gewurztraminer grapes are picked in September and the wine bottled in mid-December. The wine is ready to drink in early spring. However, those who make the wine at home will need six months before the wine is ready to drink. Thegrapes are treated with a lot of cool temperatures to make the wine since they are very delicate.
Serving suggestions
Gewürztraminer best pairings happen when you step outside of traditional French cuisine and experience other foods of the world. Middle Eastern and Moroccan cuisine, both utilizing nuts and dried fruits with roasted meats, are great examples of the types of cuisine to enjoy with Gewürztraminer wine.
