Cerasuolo D'abruzzo DOC is produced from Montepulciano grapes grown in the region of Abruzzo in Italy and was created in October 2010. Abruzzo is located at an altitude of 9,560 feet above sea level; the coastline characterized by Mediterranean climate favors the growth of the grapes. The soil characteristics also influence the production of the grapes. The soils of Abruzzo vary, and they range from sand-rich flysch, marly clay, alluvial gravel and limestone soils. In Abruzzo, the wine production areas are Teramo, Controguerra, Chieti, L’Aquilano, and Pescara.
The vine and winemaking
Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo DOC wine is produced by fermenting the grapes. The grapes are fermented "in Bianco" a fermentation technique carried out without the grape skins. This limits the fermentation period to relatively few hours. This is an ancient technique which over years has been common in the countryside of Abruzzo but has evolved with time. This technique is important since it reduces the red pigmentation of the wine resulting to the attractive cherry like color of the wine
